Expectations/Homework:
Sight Word Expectations:
First grade has a total of 20 lists of sight words, with each list consisting of 10 words. We expect each child to complete the first ten lists (all 100 List A words) by December. The second set of lists ( all 100 List B words) should be completed by May. In order to keep on schedule to complete the sight word lists in a timely manner, we suggest mastering a list every week and a half. When your child is ready to be tested over a sight word list, please cut off the bottom slip of the sight word flashcards and send it back in your child's binder. Your child is responsible for turning it into his/her teacher. If you lose your current sight word flashcards, please have your child ask his/her teacher for a new list and your teacher will be happy to provide an additional list.
Spelling Expectations:
First grade will introduce a specific phonics skill each week, as well as review previous skills. We will practice this phonics skill at school extensively. On Friday your child's teacher will administer a spelling test.
Reading Expectations:
First grade is such a fun time for your child because they acquire many literacy skills! Reading with your child is of the upmost importance. We ask that you and your child spend 10-15 minutes together reading each day. As we begin the school year, you may be doing most of the reading to your child. During this time, it is important to stop, ask questions about the story and review what it is about. As the year progresses, we expect the reading to become more student led, with students reading most sight words and CVC words independently by December. By March, we expect most students to be reading to the parent with support. We ask that every book you/your child reads is logged into their reading log. First graders will have a goal of a certain number of books read for each month. Please ensure that you/your child are writing books down daily. If the goal is not met, students will make up lost reading time during their extra recess.
